Circumcision
In Turkey, circumcision is predominantly performed for social and cultural reasons. However, it is also known to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by approximately 17%, particularly in children with congenital abnormalities of the urinary tract. Additionally, studies have shown that circumcised individuals are less likely to contract sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in adulthood.
Procedure and Techniques
Circumcision involves the surgical removal of the foreskin to expose the glans (tip of the penis). Various techniques and anesthesia methods are available, but at our clinic, we prefer the open surgical technique. This choice is based on our experience and the anatomical differences in penile structure among children. Open surgery allows for a more standardized and aesthetically pleasing outcome tailored to the child’s anatomy.
Anesthesia Preferences and Age Considerations
1. Newborns (First 45 Days)
- Circumcision is performed with local anesthesia only.
- Beyond the 45th day, infants become more active and restless, making it challenging to achieve the desired results without compromising safety and appearance.
2. Infants (1 Year and Younger)
- Circumcision under general anesthesia is not recommended due to anesthesia-related risks. Therefore, circumcision is generally avoided in this age group unless medically necessary.
3. Between 1 and 3 Years
- Circumcision is suitable for families who prefer their child to undergo the procedure without feeling or remembering the experience.
4. Between 3 and 5 Years
- Circumcision during this period is not recommended due to potential negative psychological effects from surgical interventions involving the genital area.
5. 6 Years and Older
- The procedure can be performed safely without restrictions.
Surgical Approach at the Clinic
- The procedure is performed using a hybrid anesthesia method, combining general and local anesthesia to ensure safety and comfort.
- It is a same-day outpatient procedure, allowing the child to go home shortly after the operation.
- Sutures are used but dissolve naturally, eliminating the need for removal.
- The healing process typically takes about one week, although it may take longer in some cases depending on individual healing potential.
Recommendations
For safety, circumcision should be performed in a fully equipped hospital to handle any potential complications. This approach ensures the child receives optimal care and attention during and after the procedure.
